The Yorkshire PGA Open and the Howley Hall Scratch, sponsored by Darrell Burrows on behalf of the Needless Inn.
Wednesday 4th – Thursday 5th July
This annual event continues to be a fixed and welcome fixture in the County, and beyond, golfing diary, in no small way thanks to the continued support of our own Darrell Burrows.
The day of the Pro Am thankfully opened to a dawn of good weather. A bright sunny day always helps to set the tempo for the days to come. Players and professionals began to assemble mid -morning to form their Teams, meet their Professional and bond over team tactics while enjoying a bacon sandwich and coffee. The shotgun start, the firework rocket worked this time, began in glorious sunshine and the golf began. Without doubt all Players enjoyed the course presented by our Head Green-Keeper Steve McAdams in fabulous condition. The post round meal filled every need and the prize Presentation was well attended with the winning Team (s) from 3rd – 2nd – 1st picking up some fabulous prizes. One of the Winners swapped his Scotty Cameron putter for three wedges. Enough said !
PRO AM WINNERS
The day of the Open began in even better weather at 07:00. To be honest while it was glorious for the Spectators and Supporters it might have been too hot for the Players themselves with temperatures reaching 31 degrees during the day. We had 50 professionals vying for the Yorkshire Open and 36 Amateurs competing for the Open alongside the Howley Hall Scratch trophy. The course stood up to the challenge over the 36 hole tournament with winning scores of level par for Robert Booth of Crossland Heath in winning the Open and two over par score by our own Ben Hutchinson winning the Howley Hall Scratch as well as Runner Up in the Open. Ben is weighed down with his trophies.
I am pleased and proud to report that from start to finish the event was enjoyed by the playing Amateurs, the Spectators and indeed the Professionals themselves whose comments throughout the two days were always complimentary about the course, the green staff and the catering and bar staff who all went the extra mile in making this an outstanding success. We look forward to 2018.
