Today saw the largest entry for our Spring Seniors Open, with 168 entries as well as being one of the coldest.
A big thank you to volunteer starters, Harry Johnson, Geoff Lyles, Stephen Bestwick, Jim Lee, Dave Somers and Graham Woods for standing out in the cold. Thank you also to John Andrew, members of the seniors committee not forgetting the ladies who catered in the halfway house giving up most of their day.
Despite the leaden skies and bitter breeze the scores were very good with 12 pairs recording 40 points or over. Winning scores had to be separated on count back – Howley Hall’s David Smillie and Fred Smith on 45 points were beaten into second place by Messrs Clough and Key from Lightcliffe and Oakdale golf clubs on count back and were awarded the top prize of £85 each. Dave Smillie wasn’t too disappointed to come second as he also had success in the raffle, winning the first prize of a four ball at Moor Allerton GC – he assured me that it was the first raffle he had ever won! Mr D. Stevenson and Mr A. Hall from Kilston Forest GC near Worksop were third with 44 points. Fourth and fifth positions (42 pts) were also separated by the count back rule and there were three pairs on 41 points with Howley Hall’s (Still Grafting) Ron Clarkson and his guest Chris Wikeley from Otley GC claiming sixth prize of £30 each after another count back.
